Named after the town of Paithan in Maharashtra, these sarees are known for their oyza (peacock) and kamal (lotus) motifs, woven into the pallu using pure silk and real zari. Unlike printed imitations, an authentic Paithani’s motifs are woven directly into the fabric using a technique called tapestry weaving — meaning the pattern is identical on both sides of the cloth.
A well-made Paithani is prized as much for its craftsmanship as its beauty, and a good one is typically kept as a bridal or heirloom piece rather than everyday wear.
