The Art of Kanchipuram Silk

Woven in the temple town of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, these silk sarees are famous for a distinctive weaving technique: the body and the border are often woven separately, then interlocked so tightly that the saree can be turned inside out without the join unravelling. That’s part of why a genuine Kanchipuram silk can last for generations, often passed down as a family heirloom.

The zari (gold or silver thread) work is what gives these sarees their signature shine — traditionally real silver wire coated in gold, though most affordable Kanchipuram silks today use a silver-gilt or synthetic zari alternative. Either way, the weight, the colour depth, and the border contrast are unmistakable.
